THINGS TO DO IN STAVANGER

Stavanger is located on the west coast of Norway and dates back to the medieval times in Norway when it was founded about 1125 when the cathedral was being built. Today, most of the urban attractions, restaurants and shops are all within walking distance of the harbour in the city centre.

 Old Stavanger

Gamle Stavanger (Old Stavanger) is on the west side of the Stavanger harbour and consists of 173 wooden houses that were built at the end of the 1700s and the beginning of the 1800s.

Swords in rock

By Hafrsfjord, the monument Sverd ifjell (Swords in rock). This was where Harald Fairhair gathered Norway into one kingdom in 872. The monument consists of three swords that are fixed into the grown. They symbolize peace, unity and freedom.

Norwegian Petroleum Museum

The Norwegian Petroleum Museum (Norsk Oljemuseum) is a museum for everyone. Its exhibits explain how oil and gas are created, discovered and produced, and what they are used for. The museum also provides information about technological advances and the way petroleum influences Norwegian society.

Stavanger Cathedral

Stavanger Cathedral is the only cathedral from the Middle Age that has kept its original architecture, and the only Norwegian cathedral in continuous use since the 1300s.

Stavanger Øst (East)

Visit the part of town called Stavanger Øst (East), a 20-minute walk from the city centre.  A relaxed and innovative neighbour in what used to be an industrial part of the city. You’ll find cool local bars and restaurants, and for kids: The Freedome Park – a huge indoor trampoline park!
